События Excubitor разворачиваются в 2182 году в дальнекой колонизированной звездной системе. В ее центре лежит Бафомет — звезда-«гипергигант» размером в тысячу раз больше Солнца. Вокруг него вращаются десятки, если не сотни, планет. Раньше их было еще больше, но звезда растет сотни миллионов лет и поглощает их одну за одной. В этой звездной системе по десяткам миров рассеян таинственный и мощный элемент, который мог бы навечно обеспечить человечество энергией. Этот элемент собирается в голубые кристаллы, называемые Осколками пустоты.
