Antiquarian Thomasina Bateman is writing a book about the burial mounds of England, describing the treasures she finds buried within. When an intriguing letter calls her to the small village of Bewley, tucked away in the remote countryside, she sets off by train with her assistant a day late.

However, upon her arrival, she is summoned by the mysterious man who summoned her. can´t be found anywhere. Her assistant never comes. A stubborn landowner refuses to gain access to the mound, and locals are wary of this woman who travels alone and (gasp!) wears trousers.

The excavation of Hob Mound gets off to a rocky start. And then Thomasina begins to have strange dreams...
