Созданные для работы с важнейшими экспрессами, локомотивы BR Class 52 провели свои годы славы в поездках по Западному региону сети British Railways, а в наши дни продолжают радовать посетителей исторических музейных железных дорог.
В 1955 был опубликован план модернизации сети British Railways. Этот план требовал от всех регионов постепенно вывести из работы паровозы для перехода на более современную тепловозную тягу. Основная часть сети железных дорог была ориентирована на использование дизель-электрического привода, и лишь Западный регион придерживался иного подхода, всерьез заинтересовавшись идеей эксплуатации гидравлической трансмиссии.
В последующие годы было разработано еще несколько проектов для различных задач, но ни один из них не был столь потрясающим, как «Вестерн», первый из которых сошел с конвейера в начале 1960-х. В соответствии с немецкой дизель-гидравлической технологией «Вестерны» оборудовались двумя двигателями, совместная работа которых позволяла добиться более высокой силы тяги, чем на более ранних локомотивах.
Class 52 способны развивать до скорость 90 миль/ч (а по неофициальным данным — до 110 миль/ч). Именно они задавали стандарты работы экспрессов на линии GWR в 1960—70-е годы, доказав эффективность дизель-гидравлической тяги. Как бы то ни было, в регионе с этими тепловозами распрощались в 1977, когда они были заменены на новые BR Class 50 и флагманские для British Rail высокоскоростные поезда HST.
Всего было выпущено 74 локомотива, лишь 7 из которых удалось сохранить, а некоторые из них даже находятся в рабочем состоянии, и теперь их домом стал маршрут West Somerset Railway.
