Description:
The Type 1 diesel locomotive was developed by English Electric in the 1950s and was the first major step in the transition of the British Railways network to diesel traction. After many successful and not very successful tests, the Type 1 finally showed a power of 1000 hp (746 kW), and 228 cars of this series were produced between 1957 and 1968. These locomotives, which took over a lot from steam locomotives, took an active part in the transportation of light general-purpose goods along the routes of central England and Scotland. Unlike more modern locomotives, the design of the Type 1 series locomotives included only one control cabin. This cabin, located at the rear of the locomotive, was equipped with driver´s consoles pointing in both directions of movement, and the location of the engine and equipment in front of it resembled the location of the boiler and furnace on steam locomotives. Another feature borrowed from steam locomotives was the signal discs for indicating the type of train located on both ends of the locomotive. 127 of the first diesel locomotives of this series were built according to this scheme. Poor visibility from the cabin in the direction of the "long hood" turned out to be a big problem, so Type 1 locomotives were often used in pairs, which provided excellent track visibility and a twofold increase in power, allowing them to drive heavier trains. With the transition to the TOPS classification system, the Type 1 locomotives were renamed BR Class 20. But they also had a more famous nickname — "Chopper" (Russian Helicopter), which was fixed because of the characteristic sound that occurs when the engines are running at high speeds. Although the Class 20 is one of the oldest series of diesel locomotives in Britain, many of these locomotives continue to operate to this day. About 20 perfectly preserved specimens can often be found with trains on museum railways. The Class 20 veteran diesel locomotive, which has firmly taken its place in the hearts of railway lovers, now arrives in the open spaces of Train Sim World, ready to work on the Tees Valley Line! Note: To use this add-on, you must install the Sim World Route: Tees Valley Line, which is sold separately.
