Расположенный в южной части немецкой земли Бавария, маршрут длиной 100 км (62 мили) в основном состоит из однопутных участков и проходит от обширной столицы страны до горнолыжных курортов Баварии, на границе с Австрией. Первый участок линии от Мюнхена до Пазинга и далее до Планнегга был открыт 21 мая 1854 года, и в течение того же года продолжались работы по расширению железной дороги до Гаутинга, Мюльтала и Штарнберга.
