Description:
The EMD FL9 was certainly one of the most unique locomotive designs ever conceived, and has operated on New York City commuter lines for over 40 years. Created as a result of an effort to replace worn-out and obsolete ALCO DL109 and Boxcab Electric locomotives, New Haven President Patrick McInnis ordered 60 FL9 locomotives from EMD in 1956 to operate exclusively on the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad (NH). The hybrid electric diesel model was seen as a direct competitor to the less popular Fairbanks-Morse dual-powered P-12-42 locomotive and was specifically designed to run on both diesel and electric power to match the electrified lines running under the East River and into the Grand Central Terminal in New York City. The FL9 was considered a success despite being underpowered compared to the electric locomotives it replaced, and survived several railroad mergers that resulted in its final decommissioning under Metro-North management in 2009. However, a few FL9S are still used from time to time to generate income, and some have been preserved in museum collections. The EMD FL9 for Train Simulator is available in the legacy New Haven "McGinnis" coloring, as it was operated by the Connecticut Department of Transportation in the 2000s. The features of the model include an alarm system in the cabin, as on the New York-New Haven line. Metro-North Shoreliner III passenger cars with passenger view and a steerable cabin are also included. The locomotive is also compatible with Quick Drive, giving you the ability to drive the New Haven FL9 on any route that supports Quick Drive for Train Simulator, such as those available through Steam. Scenarios specifically designed for the NEC route: New York-New Haven are also included (available separately and required to play these scenarios).
