Description:
One of Germany´s most strategically important railway lines is now available in Train Simulator, bringing to life the splendor of the Rhine Railway and representing one of Europe´s largest freight marshalling yards. The Rhine Railway runs from Mannheim to Rastatt via Karlsruhe and was opened in 1870 as an alternative route to the Baden Main Line. The line originally ran between Graben-Neudorf and Karlsruhe, following a more westerly track than the current one, and is now called the Hardt Railway, partly used by lines S1 and S11 of the Karlsruhe Stadtbahn. In 1895, the current route to Karlsruhe was opened, and then extended to Rastatt. Located entirely in the Upper Rhine Lowlands, the line is almost completely straight, and there are no major engineering structures along its path; it runs almost parallel to the Rhine Valley Railway, which connects Mannheim with Heidelberg, Karlsruhe, Rastatt, Offenburg and Basel. The line has undergone several changes over the years, adapting and expanding for both world Wars. It is especially worth noting that the line was electrified in the 1950s, and in subsequent years several stations were closed, including the Altrip station. The city is now located on the opposite bank of the Rhine, completely cut off from it as a result of the straightening of the river. Today, long-haul trains consisting of electric locomotives with intercity passenger cars, as well as ICE and TGV high-speed trains running in both directions, run along the route. It is also served by regional express trains consisting of BR425 S-Bahn electric trains. A striking landmark on the route is the Mannheim Rangirbanof, one of the largest cargo marshalling yards in Europe, with a length of six kilometers and an area of 200 hectares, as well as an important cargo hub for the Southern Rhine Valley. The 80-kilometer-long section of the Rhine Railway from Mannheim to Karlsruhe in Train Simulator recreates a busy line as we see it today and includes intersecting passenger, high-speed and freight lines that experience heavy traffic on a daily basis. The route also includes several passenger and freight locomotives and trains, including DB BR 406 ICE 3M, DB BR 189, DB BR 425, DB BR 294 and associated freight wagons.
