The year is 1899
Rich industrialist Oswald Mandus wakes up in his bed in a feverish delirium, haunted by nightmares of a dark, devilish machine. After a terrifying trip to Mexico, he is tormented by visions of some industrial utopia, remorse and tropical fever, and finds himself in the world of his nightmares. The house is silent, and the floor beneath him is shaking at the will of some infernal machine: he knows only that his children are in great danger, and that their salvation lies in his hands.
